Chapter 51

Every Day the Villain Continues to Fail

[Quick Transmigration]

Gu Jin had been imprisoned for several days, yet he didn’t appear dejected at all. The only noticeable change was that his short hair had grown out a bit, sticking out in messy directions.

The hostility in his deep, dark eyes had become even more intense, exuding an icy sharpness like a lone wolf, fallen from grace yet still holding onto its pride.

That sharp aura only slightly receded when he saw Ruan Yao enter.

Ruan Yao kept his eyes downcast, feeling uneasy and not daring to meet Gu Jin’s gaze.

After all, when Gu Jin bullied someone, he could be terrifyingly twisted.

In the visiting room, there were only the two of them.

Qi Ren waited outside with the driver.

The large room was so quiet that Ruan Yao could almost hear his own heartbeat. The ticking of the old-fashioned wall clock echoed in his ears, each movement of the hand striking his nerves.

He had hurried here after borrowing some makeup remover from a kind policewoman to clean up his ruined makeup. He hadn’t even had time to wipe the lingering moisture from his face.

Gu Jin watched Ruan Yao walk in with interest, his gaze slowly trailing upward from the high heels, to the slim waist that looked barely a palm’s width, and finally settling on that pale, delicate face.

His light-colored pupils reflected a hazy intensity, and the outer corners of his eyes carried a faint trace of red, as if he had been crying. His soft lips bore small, uneven marks, seemingly bitten out of nervousness. Even his pointed chin still had an unabsorbed droplet of water clinging to it.

Gu Jin subconsciously thought: Did he cry because I was framed?

Logic told him that someone like Ruan Yao, who had married his father for wealth and status, couldn’t possibly shed tears for him.

But a small part of him argued, what if Ruan Yao did care about him, even just a little?

“What made you think of coming here?” In the end, Gu Jin was the first to break the silence.

Ruan Yao’s fingers twisted together anxiously on his lap, his porcelain-like cheeks tinged with a faint blush. He stammered,

“I… I know you didn’t kill him. You were framed.”

“They can’t just close the case like this. It’s too...” His delicate brows furrowed. “Too careless”

Gu Jin let out a low chuckle upon hearing that. The scorching sunlight streamed in through the window beside him, yet his expression remained cold as iron.

Even in the sweltering summer heat of over thirty degrees, Ruan Yao couldn’t help but shiver.

“You think they don’t already know?” Gu Jin’s voice was slow and deliberate, laced with a lazy, almost provocative tone. “You’re too naïve, mother”

That last word, though seemingly ordinary, rolled off his tongue in a way that carried a strange, teasing intimacy. It made Ruan Yao’s ears burn red.

“Stop calling me that” Ruan Yao protested softly. “You know I’m a man.”

Gu Jin’s brows lifted slightly with an amused smirk. He deliberately dragged out his words, “Oh? But I thought you liked it”

Ruan Yao’s ears turned even redder, his thick lashes trembling with his uneven breaths. His voice, carrying a hint of petulance, sounded soft but firm: “That’s impossible”

His freshly washed face looked even more delicate against the damp strands of jet-black hair sticking to his cheeks. His skin was so pale it seemed almost translucent, like frost and snow piled together. Wrapped in an intricate black velvet dress, he stood out like a lone, dazzling flower in the dull and worn-down visiting room.

So utterly fragile and captivating.

When Ruan Yao pursed his lips, two tiny dimples appeared on his cheeks, making him look almost sweet. “Don’t think I have some ulterior motive. I just can’t stand seeing someone being falsely accused.”

He only meant to assure Gu Jin that he had no hidden agenda for helping him. But to Gu Jin, those words sounded like the awkward prideful defiance of someone unwilling to admit their true intentions.

A peculiar sense of fondness unexpectedly struck Gu Jin’s cold, black heart.

His lips curled into a smirk tinged with mischief. “Why are you being so kind?”

Ruan Yao felt his blood pressure spike. He always ended up getting irritated when alone with Gu Jin. “Believe it or not, I’m going to catch the real killer”

Gu Jin raised a brow. “And how do you plan to do that?”

Ruan Yao was naive, easily bullied, and small in stature. He got scared easily and would tear up over the slightest fright. Someone as delicate as him, how did he expect to bring a murderer to justice?

Gu Jin’s gaze turned unreadable. He had assumed Ruan Yao would wish for him to rot in prison, considering the dangerous secret he held over him.

Meanwhile, Ruan Yao was thinking about how the real killer seemed to have some sort of fixation on him. If he used himself as bait, the culprit might just show up again.

But given that his supernatural powers were currently sealed, he was basically powerless. Even ten of him wouldn’t stand a chance against that murderer.

Suddenly, he recalled something, the killer had once mentioned that there was some kind of secret hidden in Gu Rongzhang’s bedroom. If he could uncover it, maybe he could find the truth behind Gu Rongzhang’s death.

That way, he could complete both his main mission and side quest at the same time promotion and a pay raise would be just within reach!

Fueled by newfound determination, he lifted his chin and declared, “Just wait and see.”

Gu Jin’s pupils contracted as he locked onto a small, deep red mark just below Ruan Yao’s neck. If not for the bulletproof glass between them, he might have lunged forward already.

The mark looked like it had been there for a while, a smoldering crimson shade standing out starkly against his delicate porcelain skin.

Grinding his teeth, Gu Jin struggled to keep his voice from twisting into something feral. “Who touched you?”

“When I wasn’t around, who touched you?”

He knew his sudden anger made no sense, Ruan Yao had never promised him anything. He had no right to interfere in who he was with.

But the violent jealousy searing through his veins burned his eyes red. “Was it Gu Rongming? Did he force you? Did he threaten you?”

Ruan Yao had no idea why Gu Jin was suddenly so agitated. He blinked at him in confusion. “Why would you say that?”

Right now, shouldn’t Gu Jin be focusing on his own predicament? Instead, he was acting like a rabid beast, fixated on some random mark on Ruan Yao’s neck.

Ruan Yao truly had no clue how the mark got there. He scratched at it absentmindedly, only feeling a faint itch, probably just a mosquito bite.

Gu Jin was so weird.

“You should be worrying about yourself first” Ruan Yao reminded him before suddenly asking, “Do you… have a twin brother?”

At this point in time, forensic technology was still unable to distinguish between identical twins' DNA, so no one even considered the possibility that Gu Jin might have a twin brother.

Gu Jin's expression was strange. "Of course not. My mother died giving birth to me, and that bastard Gu Rongzhang got what he deserved. He only ever had one son, only me"

Speaking of this, he let out a cold snort. That womanizing scumbag, Gu Rongzhang, hadn't felt the slightest bit of grief after his wife's passing.

Instead, he had spent decades indulging in the company of various women, losing himself in their warmth and softness.

From as far back as Gu Jin could remember, he had often stumbled upon women's intimate garments appearing out of nowhere in different corners of the house. Sometimes, he would even catch that brainless stallion entangled with a new lover in some shadowy nook.

A disgusting scumbag who treated women like playthings deserved to die.

Gu Jin's eyes darkened as he scrutinized Ruan Yao, who had yet to fall into Gu Rongzhang’s grasp. He let out a quiet breath of relief, at least nothing had happened yet.

Otherwise, he might have really become a murderer.

"Yao Yao, don’t trust Gu Rongming. In the Gu family, the only person you can trust is yourself"

Ruan Yao raised an eyebrow. "And what about you?"

"Me?" Gu Jin's lips curled into a reckless smile, as though he weren’t the one sitting there, handcuffed, a fallen suspect. The slanting sunlight cast a golden glow over his handsome features. "You can always trust me"

When Ruan Yao stepped out of the visitation room, Qi Ren was the first to greet him.

The tall, elegant young man gazed at Ruan Yao’s lowered lashes with concern, his voice gentle. "Did the young master give you any trouble, Madam?"

Ruan Yao raised an eyebrow, keeping all his and Gu Jin’s words to himself. He blinked innocently at Qi Ren. "Of course not. Why would he trouble me?"

Qi Ren maintained a professional smile, bowing slightly as he spoke. "I thought the two of you didn’t get along well."

Ruan Yao’s gaze deepened. In the dim light, his stunning eyes took on a rich amber hue, shimmering like a pool of intoxicating liquor.

Just looking at them could make one’s heart sink into a daze.

Ruan Yao smelled good, like a faint floral fragrance. Delicate yet not cloying, elegant without being gaudy. Qi Ren felt a subtle dizziness creeping over him.

He suddenly wondered, was his entire body this fragrant?

"Then who do you think I should get along with?"

Ruan Yao tilted his head up slightly, his movements fearless as he leaned toward Qi Ren, just a fraction closer, almost close enough for their noses to touch.

With innocent, crescent-moon eyes, he asked, "With you?"

Qi Ren’s mind buzzed, his original goal of extracting information from Ruan Yao completely forgotten.

"M-Madam..." he stammered, a faint sheen of sweat appearing on his fair skin.

Ruan Yao wasn’t particularly short, and with his slender heels, he was now at just the right height that a slight tilt of his chin could bring their lips dangerously close.

He was so close, yet always left a barely-there gap an invisible boundary, a warning of their difference in status.

Poor Qi Ren unconsciously took a step back, his spine pressing against the cold tiles behind him.

The sudden chill shocked him back to his senses. Flustered, he lowered his head and muttered, "Madam, the Second Master is waiting for you to return."

Ruan Yao felt a little guilty. He really was picking on poor Qi Ren way too much.

Such a terrible, mean-spirited lady of the house. Definitely someone who deserved to be ruthlessly humiliated later on.

He swore, this would be the last time he tormented Qi Ren. Just a little more, and his 'vicious stepmother' role would be complete.

He parted his soft, rosy lips slightly, revealing a hint of pearly white teeth. His voice was sweetly imperious.

"I twisted my ankle on the way out. It hurts"

The warm breath he exhaled brushed against the pale shell of Qi Ren’s ear. The high-ranking, stunning "Madam" leaned in close, speaking with a voice like a siren’s—a velvety, androgynous lilt, soft as melted spring water.

"I want you to carry me back."

Qi Ren’s fingers clenched involuntarily.
