Chapter 35

Every Day the Villain Continues to Fail

[Quick Transmigration]

The once quiet funeral hall suddenly became chaotic. People exchanged glances, their expressions a mixture of surprise and intrigue.

Gu Jin's words carried a heavy weight, and those quick to react immediately realized that this beautiful widow from the Gu family, who seemed almost unreal, must have had some sort of improper relationship with Gu Jin before.

It was possible that she had been involved with both father and son at the same time.

What a formidable person she must be.

Because there were members of the Gu family present, no one dared to openly discuss such sordid affairs in front of him.

However, a few troublemakers, emboldened by the situation, shamelessly ogled Ruan Yao, starting from his pointed chin, down his tiny waist, and finally to his delicate ankles encased in stockings.

Ruan Yao, not good with words, felt flustered the moment he became the center of attention. At a loss for a retort, his small face turned pale, while his full, crimson lips pressed into a thin line.

His eyes, hidden behind the black veil, fluttered nervously, his thick lashes trembling slightly.

He appeared utterly humiliated.

In Gu Jin's eyes, Ruan Yao had clearly been struck where it hurt, his guilt exposed.

No matter how bad Ruan Yao was, on the surface, he was still legally Gu Rongzhang's wife. Gu Jin's public disrespect toward his father's widow, with his foul words, was bound to be sensationalized by the tabloids tomorrow, with every detail distorted and exaggerated.

Gu Rongming, with his sharp and cold phoenix eyes, raised an eyebrow and spoke sharply: "This is the funeral hall! What nonsense are you spouting? Have you lost all respect for your father?"

His words were harsh, nearly accusing Gu Jin of being ungrateful. Her father had passed away, and not only was he unmoved, but he also dared to make a scene in the funeral hall and speak rudely to his father's widow.

Gu Jin sneered, well aware of Gu Rongming's intentions.

If Gu Jin didn't show up, Gu Rongming would have been able to inherit the entire Gu family's fortune without issue.

Perhaps… His dangerous gaze lingered on Ruan Yao, a cold smile creeping up his lips, perhaps even this heartless person would be 'inherited' by him too.

From what Gu Jin knew about this vain man, Gu Rongming, who was younger and more attractive than Gu Rongzhang, probably wouldn't need any persuasion; he would eagerly offer himself.

Ruan Yao turned his gaze away, unwilling to look at him. Gu Jin's eyes were terrifying, as though he intended to swallow him whole.

So frightening.

He tried to steady his voice, forcing calmness: "If you're here to pay respects to your father, then come on over. It's the last time you'll see him."

His voice was naturally soft, and to sound more feminine, he had long been accustomed to speaking in a lowered tone, giving his voice a unique, husky charm that blurred the lines between male and female.

Gu Jin couldn't help but laugh, impressed by how deeply Ruan Yao had immersed himself in his act.

"What a show." He strode over, taking the incense from the solemnly presented tray, deliberately brushing past Ruan Yao’s shoulder, bumping into him with force.

Ruan Yao, not used to wearing high heels after his recent reincarnation, nearly lost his balance from the impact.

His ankle twisted sharply, and a sharp pain shot up his leg, making his head nearly slam into the corner of the coffin. If it weren't for the immediate danger, he would have suffered a bloody injury or at least a scar.

With a flash of fear, Ruan Yao closed his eyes.

"Madam, be careful" A young, flirtatious voice suddenly rang out from behind him, and a hand supported his waist, almost lingering as it glided down his side.

So delicate.

Still reeling from the pain in his ankle, Ruan Yao’s pale amber eyes shimmered with unshed tears, visible through his veil.

"Thank you," Ruan Yao murmured, his voice betraying the pain he was trying to hide.

The man paused, his breath catching before he smiled even more enthusiastically: "Madam, where did you hurt yourself? I'm a medical student, I can help you check."

Ruan Yao instinctively recoiled from the stranger, stammering as he turned his head away: "No need."

A servant came up to help him, and Ruan Yao's fingers rested on the servant's arm. As soon as he straightened up, a sharp, piercing pain shot through his ankle. Tears could no longer be held back, and a faint red blush spread across his eyes.

The people present were stunned.

Gu Rongming tapped the armrest of the wheelchair and coldly told Gu Jin, "Apologize to her."

"Apologize?" Gu Jin casually bowed with the three incense sticks in his hand, the ash falling onto the gleaming floor. The entire hall was filled with a faint scent of incense.

"I see she's enjoying it; thank me, she can't get enough of it" Gu Jin nonchalantly inserted the incense into the burner, glaring at Ruan Yao's pale face, unsure whether out of anger or some other emotion.

"I didn’t know that after just a few days, Uncle has already started speaking up for her. Ruan Yao’s abilities are quite impressive" Gu Jin's words were laced with malice, as if he wished to further tarnish the relationships between the people involved.

Ruan Yao's reputation as an evil didn't matter, but the reputation of the Gu family couldn't be slandered.

In front of the guests, Gu Rongming's cold expression barely showed a seemingly tolerant smile, "If you're still thinking of the Gu family, you shouldn’t slander your own family like this."

"You're not a child anymore, having played around outside for so many years, have you ever thought of contributing to the family?"

"You're not a child anymore, Gu Jin" Gu Rongming's eyes were filled with pity.

His words subtly implied that Gu Jin, who had neglected the family's interests, was unworthy of being the heir.

Although Gu Jin had been driven out of the family by Gu Rongzhang years ago, with all his funds cut off in a fit of anger, he hadn’t issued a public statement severing ties. Therefore, Gu Jin’s return was not seen as good news by most members of the Gu family who were waiting for their share of the inheritance.

No one knew how Gu Jin had developed his career outside, except for Ruan Yao, who seemed to have an omniscient perspective. People thought he had returned only because he was desperate and wanted to seize the family fortune.

Ruan Yao, confused, asked the system, "Since Gu Jin is back, why don’t I just flatter him directly? He's the male lead, after all, and sticking with the right person is the way to survive."

The system pondered with a wise look for a while, "Perhaps it’s to highlight your character as a flirt."

Ruan Yao regretted asking. The blow hit harder than expected.

The atmosphere in the room was charged with tension, and an invisible spark was slowly igniting the increasingly oppressive air.

Gu Rongming suddenly turned to Ruan Yao, his tone still gentle, showing no sign of annoyance, "Sister-in-law, please rest. Let the doctor check your injury."

Ruan Yao, who was already clinging to his toes in fear of falling, quickly thanked Gu Rongming with sparkling eyes, grateful that he hadn't said anything inappropriate.

Gu Rongming was slightly stunned.

Why had Ruan Yao suddenly become so agreeable? With her usual nature of stirring trouble, she should have been clinging on desperately.

His gaze subtly shifted between the angry Gu Jin and the flustered Ruan Yao, his eyes half-closing as understanding dawned upon him.

It seemed there was something going on between Ruan Yao and Gu Jin.

If the scandal of secretly courting the stepmother came to light, not only would Gu Jin's claim to the family fortune be jeopardized, but his reputation in high society would be destroyed as well.

Gu Rongming smirked. It seemed the evidence had been delivered right to him.

Ruan Yao had slightly sprained his ankle, and a red bump had appeared.

The family doctor carefully applied some medicine, advising him to sit back and rest for a while.

Finally, he didn’t have to wear shoes. Ruan Yao happily kicked off his high heels, and the black pointed heels fell to the ground, revealing their seductive red soles.

His foot, wrapped in stockings, looked so delicate it seemed like it could be held and played with at any moment.

The sock from the injured foot was also removed, revealing a pale pink foot gently resting on the footrest.

When Gu Rongming entered, he saw this alluring scene. The woman was lazily half-leaning on the high stool, her veil lifted to reveal a flawless, delicate face, her arm resting on the redwood table as white as fine snow.

Her shoes had been kicked off, the fiery red soles unintentionally igniting something deep inside Gu Rongming’s eyes.

"Sister-in-law" Gu Rongming softly called her, as though not wanting to disturb the beauty in spring slumber.

Ruan Yao was originally resting with his eyes closed but woke up when he was gently called. Upon seeing it was Gu Rongming, he was momentarily surprised and shy: "Uncle, is there something you need?"

Gu Rongming smiled and said, "According to tradition, you need to keep vigil for your brother tonight. I came to check on you because of your injured foot. Can you handle it?"

"A lonely man and a widowed man... such a great opportunity. Host, take advantage of it!" The system raised its small handkerchief and excitedly cheered.

Ah, isn't it a bit too casual to trick someone into bed on the first day?

Ruan Yao’s eyelashes fluttered, his beautiful amber eyes gazing at the man with infinite spring warmth, and a faint blush appeared on his pale cheeks: "It still hurts a bit."

He complained coquettishly, his voice dragging like a cat’s, sweet and seductive: "I still need to kneel for so long tonight. Uncle, please come help me."

Ruan Yao’s feet were exceptionally beautiful. The arches were slightly raised, the toes slender, and the tips of his feet pale pink, as if sculpted from jade.

Gu Rongming, who had remained indifferent to beauty for so many years, was not easily moved by looks.

But Ruan Yao was too alluring. She gazed at him with a pitiful expression, her face pure, but her toes provocatively raised, teasing Gu Rongming to reach out.

Although he called Ruan Yao 'sister-in-law' in terms of age, Gu Rongming was still seven or eight years older than her.

Gu Rongming's gaze deepened as he looked at Ruan Yao. His expression softened slightly, but his smile remained calm and unaffected: "If you can't handle it, I will call a doctor."

He didn’t touch Ruan Yao.

His indifference made it seem as though he was born without feelings, truly like a god who had severed all desires.

If it weren’t for the way he hurriedly pushed the wheelchair, I’d believe it.

Ruan Yao pouted.

"By the way, why didn’t he call or message me? Why bother running all the way here?"

Then the system once again made Ruan Yao lose his composure: "Because he doesn’t want to add you on WeChat and can’t be bothered to remember your number."

The man standing outside the door had pale, sickly skin with a faint red tinge. His body was already prone to emotional instability, and any shift in his mood could easily be exposed.

"Second Master, do you have any orders?" The secretary walked over and respectfully lowered his head.

Gu Rongming wearily rubbed his forehead: "Who was the person talking to the madam today?"

"He’s the new doctor hired by the hospital this year."

"Tell him to leave."
