Chapter 38

Every Day the Villain Continues to Fail

[Quick Transmigration]

When Ruan Yao said those words, he wasn’t entirely confident about them.

Based on his understanding of Gu Jin's personality, there was no guarantee that Gu Jin wouldn’t simply tie him up, torture him until he revealed the location of the will, and then chop him up in a fit of rage.

Ruan Yao tried to imagine such a bloody scene and ended up scaring himself pale.

As for the will he mentioned, it wasn’t just something he made up in desperation.

It actually existed.

A month ago, Gu Rongzhang was diagnosed with lung cancer. To prevent turmoil in the family, he chose to keep this news a secret. The only people who knew were the family’s old doctor and Ruan Yao.

To avoid leaving suddenly without preparation, Gu Rongzhang had privately written his will.

When Ruan Yao thought about the contents of the will and then considered the grim and violent Gu Jin alongside the scheming Gu Rongming, cold sweat broke out on his back.

Gu Jin narrowed his eyes the moment he heard those words. “You have the old man’s will? Did he know someone would come to kill him?”

Ruan Yao thought about it. Since the person in question had already passed away, there was no longer a need to keep the matter secret.

Taking a step back to put more distance between himself and Gu Jin, he nervously tightened his grip on the loose-fitting dress he was wearing. “He was gravely ill and wrote it just in case” he said cautiously.

His shoes had been kicked off earlier when Gu Jin had pressed him down on the sofa. Now, one pale pink foot rested awkwardly on the cold floor, the ankle still marked by darkened traces of medicinal ointment.

Ruan Yao was terrified of pain, and he hated people who caused him pain.

The corners of his crimson lips curved slightly, revealing a mischievous and enticing smile on his pretty face. He thought he looked fierce, but in reality, he only managed to tickle people’s hearts. “Find your father’s murderer, and then you can have the will” he said.

Gu Jin responded “How can I trust you not to alter the will yourself?”

Ruan Yao couldn’t be bothered to argue with him; he just wanted to get away as quickly as possible.

The faint light of dawn spilled through the large windows into the oppressive silence of the hall. Soon, the servants would wake up.

If anyone saw Gu Jin and Ruan Yao, two men spending the night alone together, especially with Ruan Yao looking so disheveled, no amount of explanation would clear his name.

Ruan Yao puffed up his cheeks, the soft flesh on his face rounding. His long hair brushed against his pale neck as he said “Believe it or not, but if the murderer isn’t caught, neither you nor Gu Rongming will get to sit in the master’s seat”

Gu Jin sneered, though he couldn’t articulate the sour, almost maddening sensation churning inside him.

“So you’re that devoted to the old man?”

Ruan Yao, trying to back away discreetly, lifted his lashes to reveal a pair of cold, clear eyes. “He’s your father, after all”

Gu Jin found the remark laughable. Standing at the boundary between shadow and light, his tall figure looked like that of a demon. “Father? Ruan Yao, you’ll regret what you just said”

Ruan Yao didn’t care. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, he could already see the vague silhouette of the gardener entering the garden.

Determined, he bit his soft lips, enduring the sharp pain in his ankle as he turned and bolted toward the hallway.

The Gu family’s main residence had a peculiar layout, resembling a spider’s web. The central hall served as the focal point, with corridors and rooms radiating outward in every direction.

For a first-time visitor, it was all too easy to get lost.

Ruan Yao ran frantically, terrified of being seen and equally scared that Gu Jin might chase after him.

But Gu Jin stayed rooted in that small patch of shadow, a lingering gloom etched across his sharp features.

One of Ruan Yao’s high heels had been left behind on the sofa, forgotten in his panicked escape.

He was too scared of Gu Jin, fleeing in such a hurry that he couldn’t think about anything else.

If someone were to find the abandoned shoe, it could easily spark rumors of a romantic scandal.

Gu Jin walked over, picked up the fallen shoe, and held it in his hand.

The black lambskin high heel had a sole painted in a vivid, seductive red, as if it could scorch a man’s fingertips.

The police arrived that afternoon.

Gu Rongzhang, a prominent figure in Yun City, had died under circumstances that sent shockwaves through the entire city.

Adding to the gruesome intrigue of the case was his bizarre cause of death—his heart had been removed while he was still alive.

When Gu Rongzhang was found, he had been alone in his room, leaving no useful clues. The killer seemed to know the Gu family’s surveillance system inside out; the security footage revealed no suspicious figures at all.

The only one who could really be linked to any issues was Ruan Yao.

It was Ruan Yao who first discovered Gu Rongzhang’s body.

At that time, Ruan Yao was still putting on a gentle and considerate facade, often bringing Gu Rongzhang sweet soups or snacks. Who would have thought that this time, upon opening the door, what greeted him was Gu Rongzhang’s tragic corpse.

As Gu Rongzhang’s newly married spouse and the first person to discover the body, Ruan Yao naturally became the police's prime target for questioning.

The chief inspector was a young man who didn’t seem older than thirty. He wore a light blue uniform, had sharp features, a high nose, and deep-set eyes, paired with a slender waist and long legs. If one didn’t know he was the captain of the criminal investigation unit, they might have mistaken him for a male model pulled straight out of a fashion show.

Ruan Yao had spent the entire night keeping vigil over the body. In the latter half of the night, Gu Jin came by and tried to do that sort of thing to him. After wrestling with him for hours, Ruan Yao barely had any chance to rest.

When he was called to the sitting room, Ruan Yao’s long lashes drooped low, his whole being seemingly dazed and lethargic.

Yu Chuan turned his head and immediately saw the 'woman' in a beige silk dress pushing open the mahogany door.

She was stunning.

Even someone like Yu Chuan couldn’t help but feel a surge of admiration at first sight.

Jet-black hair cascaded down like a river, reaching her waist. A few soft strands of messy hair clung to the porcelain-like cheeks. Her moist, light-colored eyes blinked as she saw the police, showing a polite but slightly timid smile.

Like a little rabbit.

“Mr. Gu’s spouse” Yu Chuan greeted. He had heard before that Gu Rongzhang had married someone who looked like a heavenly being, but he had been too busy with other cases to meet her.

The man extended a hand.

Ruan Yao, still drowsy, paused for a moment before extending his own hand for a handshake.

It was soft, with a faint coolness to the palm.

The pink fingertips brushed unintentionally against the rough pads of Yu Chuan’s fingers.

“Hello” He smiled politely at Yu Chuan, his eyes curving slightly.

When he smiled, he became even more beautiful. His delicate features seemed bathed in spring light, and just seeing his smile made Yu Chuan’s heart involuntarily skip a beat.

Yu Chuan’s tone unconsciously softened. “There’s no need to worry, Ms. Gu. I just have a few routine questions”

As Gu Rongzhang’s widower, Ruan Yao naturally had to appear heartbroken to the extreme. He gradually subdued his smile and sighed softly.

When he lowered his voice, it wasn’t the coquettish charm one might expect from a woman. Instead, it carried a husky, ambiguous quality that blurred the line between masculine and feminine. The light tail-end of his words seemed to roll off his tongue, exuding an almost intoxicating allure.

“Officer Yu, feel free to ask whatever you need. I’ll do my best to cooperate”

Yu Chuan unconsciously rubbed the spot on his hand where Ruan Yao had brushed against him, his gaze briefly flickering.

Yu Chuan’s good looks were different from Gu Jin’s fierce demeanor. His smile was filled with an irrepressible brightness and righteousness, effortlessly gaining the trust of others.

At least, Ruan Yao found him quite reliable at the moment.

He sat on the sofa, his slender legs neatly pressed together, the silk fabric outlining their elegant shape. The hem of the dress revealed a section of smooth, porcelain-like calves, radiant and delicate.

It made one want to reach out, hold them, and gently run their fingers over the skin. The texture would surely be exquisite.

Yu Chuan’s lips curved into a slight smile, his hands clasped together and resting on his knees. “Could you tell me when you discovered Mr. Gu’s body?”

Ruan Yao couldn’t help but feel a bit panicked as he recalled the bloody scene.

When he first transmigrated into this world, the system had forced him to receive all the original memories. The gruesome death of Gu Rongzhang had left a deep psychological scar on him.

The “woman” clenched the fabric of his dress tightly, his pale, slender fingers turning bone-white under the strain. His small face drained of color. “That day, I saw he had been working in the study for a long time, so I thought…”

Ruan Yao dared not conceal anything in front of the police. His voice was soft and weak, but his constantly moving lips, like tender flower buds, were moist, red, and delicate, making one wonder if a bite would release sweet nectar.

When Ruan Yao grew tired of speaking, he picked up the white porcelain cup in front of him and took a sip of the tea inside. The meeting room’s window wasn’t fully closed, and a cool breeze stirred the sheer curtains.

His lips, now wet, held a tiny petal of a flower that clung to the center of his mouth.

Yu Chuan’s gaze darkened as it settled on the small, moist petal.

“That’s... that’s about all” Ruan Yao still shuddered at the thought of Gu Rongzhang’s bloody body lying on the floor. His voice trembled as he spoke.

“Don’t move” Yu Chuan suddenly said.

Ruan Yao froze, looking slightly flustered. “What’s wrong?”

The man’s rough finger, calloused from handling guns, brushed against Ruan Yao’s lips as lightly as a feather.

The damp petal now rested on Yu Chuan’s fingertip.

“There was a petal” Yu Chuan said, showing the delicate pink remnant to Ruan Yao.

Ruan Yao blinked slowly and gave a polite smile. “Thank you”

Yu Chuan seemed to be such a thoughtful and attentive man.

With a gentle hand, Yu Chuan rested a palm on Ruan Yao’s slender shoulder, offering quiet reassurance. “There’s no need to be afraid. We’ll do everything we can to catch the murderer”

His hand unconsciously slid downward, grazing Ruan Yao’s back like a dragonfly skimming water.

Ruan Yao didn’t notice he had been taken advantage of.

Looking up with gratitude, his cheeks puffed slightly with soft flesh. “Thank you so much, Officer Yu”

Yu Chuan paused. His gaze turned probing as he studied Ruan Yao, finally confirming that the beauty before her was truly naïve.

The smile on his face grew even gentler.

“If I have further questions, I hope you’ll cooperate”

Ruan Yao nodded, his eyes clear and bright. “I will”

Knock, knock!

The door to the meeting room suddenly opened.

Standing in the doorway was Gu Rongming’s secretary, pushing Gu Rongming’s wheelchair. The moment the door opened, the scene of Yu Chuan and Ruan Yao standing very close to each other came into view.

The sickly yet elegant man clenched a fist and coughed into it softly.

The secretary promptly handed over a handkerchief.

“Sister-in-law and Officer Yu seem to be having a pleasant conversation” Gu Rongming said with a faint smile. However, the smile didn’t reach his eyes, carrying a cold and indifferent undertone instead.

The moment Ruan Yao heard Gu Rongming’s voice, he stiffened, panic flickering through him.

Why did it feel like he’d just been caught in the act?

Yu Chuan was the first to step forward, maintaining a righteous demeanor as he greeted Gu Rongming. “Second Master Gu”

Gu Rongming’s smile remained listless, too lazy even to lift the corners of his mouth. “Officer Yu, I hope you’ll identify the culprit soon. It’s been half a month without any leads, which puts us in a difficult position”

He turned his gaze to Ruan Yao, who was hiding behind Yu Chuan, and tapped his fingers on the armrest of his wheelchair. “Sister-in-law, I didn’t realize you could chat so happily with just anyone”

His face still held a faint, detached smile, but his voice was as cold as frost and snow.

Ruan Yao tightened his grip on his fingers.
